Does the DVLA hold MOT records?
Quick answer
No. MOT records are held by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency), which approves test centres and keeps every result. The DVLA uses that record to confirm a vehicle has a valid MOT before it can be taxed. In Northern Ireland, the DVA runs MOT testing.
That's why a search for a "DVLA MOT check" really means a check of DVSA's MOT database. It's an easy mix-up, since the DVLA's name is on your logbook and your tax reminders. This table shows who does what.
| Agency | Full name | What it does | Its part in the MOT |
|---|---|---|---|
| DVSA | Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency | Approves MOT centres and testers, and runs driving tests | Keeps every MOT result in Great Britain |
| DVLA | Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency | Keeps the vehicle register and collects vehicle tax | Checks for a valid MOT before a vehicle is taxed |
| DVA | Driver and Vehicle Agency | Driver licensing and vehicle testing in Northern Ireland | Tests cars at its own centres in Northern Ireland |
How to do a DVLA MOT check online
You only need the registration number. There’s no need for the V5C logbook, an account or a payment.
- Enter the number plate Type it into the box above, with or without the space.
- Read the MOT status card Green means valid, amber means it runs out within a month and red means it has expired.
- Check the expiry date The exact day the current MOT runs out, with a countdown.
- Scroll through the history Every past result, advisory and mileage reading since 2005.
The same report also shows the tax status, so you can confirm in one go that a vehicle is road-legal. Want to know the best day to book? The MOT due date calculator works it out for you.
What your MOT status means
A DVLA MOT check can return a few different results. Here's what each one means, and whether the vehicle can be driven.
| MOT status | What it means | Can it be driven? |
|---|---|---|
| Valid | A current MOT certificate is on record | Yes, if it's taxed, insured and roadworthy |
| Due soon | The MOT runs out within a month | Yes, until the expiry date. Book a test now to keep your renewal date |
| Expired | The last MOT has run out | Only to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for repairs |
| Failed, old MOT still valid | The latest test failed, but the previous certificate hasn't run out | Only if no dangerous defects were found, and only while the old MOT lasts |
| No MOT yet | A newer vehicle that hasn't reached its first MOT | Yes. Most need a first MOT by their third birthday |
| No record | Exempt, imported, or tested before records began | Check the vehicle's age and status before you rely on it |
Why the DVLA checks your MOT before you tax
Although the DVLA doesn't hold MOT results, it does check them. You need a valid MOT to tax most vehicles, and the MOT must be valid on the day the tax starts.
GOV.UK warns that MOT information can take up to two days to reach its systems after a test. So, if you've only just passed, you may need to wait a day or two before taxing online. If you tax at a Post Office, take your certificate or a screenshot of your MOT history as evidence.
In practice, that means an expired MOT can cause two problems at once: no MOT and, soon after, no tax. Our car tax check shows a vehicle's tax status alongside its MOT.
Penalties for driving without a valid MOT
The rules are strict, and there's no grace period. Police can also use automatic number plate recognition cameras to spot vehicles with no valid MOT.
| Offence | Maximum penalty |
|---|---|
| Driving without a valid MOT | A fine of up to £1,000 |
| Driving a vehicle that failed with a dangerous defect | A fine of up to £2,500, 3 penalty points and a possible driving ban |
| Driving to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for repairs | Allowed, as long as the vehicle is roadworthy |
Beyond the fine, driving without an MOT can also affect your insurance. Many policies expect the vehicle to be roadworthy and legally tested, so check yours before you drive.
MOT checks in Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, the DVA tests vehicles at its own test centres, rather than at private garages. Cars and motorcycles there have their first MOT at four years old, not three.
The good news is that Northern Irish MOT results are on the same national database from 2017. Therefore, a DVLA MOT check works for vehicles registered in Northern Ireland in exactly the same way. The only difference is that older tests from before 2017 won't appear.
Checking the MOT on a car you're buying
A valid MOT is a minimum, not a seal of approval. It shows the car met the legal standards on the day of the test, and nothing more. So, before you buy, run a check and confirm three things:
- The registration matches. Check the plate on the car, the V5C and the advert all agree.
- The MOT is valid for a while yet. A car with a few days left will need testing straight away, at your expense.
- The history makes sense. Read the latest advisories and the mileage in a full MOT history check.
Is this the official DVLA MOT checker?
No. The government's official MOT service is DVSA's check MOT history on GOV.UK. Separately, the DVLA's vehicle enquiry service shows a vehicle's tax status and MOT expiry date, but not its test history.
MOT Check Online is independent. We use the same official DVSA and DVLA data, then put MOT status, tax and history on one page with plain-English explanations. If you need the official record, for example for a dispute, use GOV.UK.
DVLA MOT check: frequently asked questions
Is a DVLA MOT check free?
Yes. Checking whether a vehicle has a valid MOT is free on GOV.UK and on MOT Check Online. You only need the registration number.
Is there a phone number for MOT questions?
For missing or incorrect MOT records, contact DVSA by email at enquiries@dvsa.gov.uk or on 0300 123 9000, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
How quickly does a new MOT show up?
Usually within hours, although GOV.UK says it can take up to two days. Our report also keeps each result for up to six hours, so check again later if a brand-new test is missing.
Can the police tell if my car has no MOT?
Yes. Police number plate recognition cameras can check a vehicle against official records, which include whether it has a valid MOT.
Do I need the V5C to check a car's MOT?
No. A DVLA MOT check only needs the registration. You need the V5C for other jobs, such as taxing the vehicle or telling the DVLA you've sold it.
Can I drive to my MOT if it has expired?
Yes, but only to a test you've already booked, or to a garage for repairs. The vehicle must still be roadworthy, and it should be insured.
